Moderne Architectuur in Orlando: Een Overzicht

Orlando, Florida, staat bekend om zijn levendige en diverse karakter, en herbergt een aantal indrukwekkende architectonische hoogstandjes. De architectuur van de stad is een naadloze mix van zowel hedendaagse als historische stijlen, die de groei van de stad door de jaren heen prachtig illustreert. Van iconische gebouwen tot innovatieve projecten, Orlando biedt een breed scala aan architectonische ervaringen.

Moderne architectuur is een stroming binnen de bouwstijlen met praktische functionaliteit als een van de opvallende kenmerken. Bij het ontwerpen van gebouwen ligt de nadruk bij moderne architectuur op het minimalistische karakter. Dit komt voort uit het invulling geven aan de combinatie van efficiënt en functioneel wonen met toepassing van praktische materialen.

Het ontstaan van moderne architectuur is terug te voeren naar het idee dat de functie van een gebouw het uitgangspunt moet zijn en dat het ontwerp zich daarnaar dient te vormen. Architect Louis Sullivan (1856-1924) paste op basis van dit principe als eerste modernisme toe in de architectuur in Chicago in de tijd dat er voor het eerst stalen hoogbouw werd gerealiseerd. Uit de ontwerpen voor hoogbouw en de intrede van de lift zijn de wolkenkrabbers voortgekomen. In het begin van de twintigste eeuw is de verdere basis gelegd voor moderne architectuur die overigens in de periode rond 1960 ten einde is gekomen, waarbij de hedendaagse architectuur vorm kreeg. Dat neemt niet weg dat de moderne stijl nog altijd van invloed was en is op de eigentijdse architectuur.

De basis van het concept om het design de functie te laten volgen (form follows function), is destijds dus gelegd door architect Louis Sullivan, maar er zijn meer architecten die daarop voortborduurden. Bijvoorbeeld Le Corbusier die net als tijdgenoot Ludwig Mies van der Rohe een van de vernieuwende ontwerpers was. In deze periode aan het begin van de moderne architectuur kwam de machinale industrialisatie op in de bouw en was er minder aandacht voor specialistisch ambachtswerk, zoals het aanbrengen van versieringen en bijzondere details. Overigens vormde Frank Lloyd Wright daar nog een uitzondering op met de toepassing van ramen als kunstglas met de gedachte dat er dan geen andere kunst nodig was.

Kenmerken van Moderne Architectuur

Er zijn meerdere stijlen binnen de moderne architectuur, variërend van expressionisme tot constructivistische architectuur, maar er zijn een aantal algemene kenmerken op van toepassing:

Het kille en koude gevoel van de vrije ruimte met het strakke design en minimalistische kenmerken werd ingeruild voor een mix van stijlen. Er kwam meer ruimte voor sierlijke ontwerpen en kleuren, maar ook voor een andere indeling. Dat wil niet zeggen dat er geen grote open ruimtes meer herkenbaar zijn, maar dan wel met oog voor warmte, comfort en privacy.

Elk van deze iconische gebouwen heeft zijn eigen unieke geschiedenis en betekenis.

Roger's Building

Downtown’s historic Roger’s building was constructed in 1886, making it one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city. The building’s design is typical of 19th-century commercial architecture, with its brick exterior, a prominent cornice at the top of the building, and large display windows. The building has a long and diverse resume, having been home to various businesses over the years. Charles Rogers, the original owner, constructed the building as a hardware store.

Epcot's Spaceship Earth

Epcot’s Spaceship Earth globe is Florida’s most Iconic structure. Constructed in 1982, the giant geodesic sphere stands 180 ft tall and is covered in a triangular pattern of reflective panels. The interior of the globe is a quintessential Disney-themed attraction that takes visitors on a slow-moving ride that takes them through the history of human life with the help of state-of-the-art special effects and animatronics.

Knowles Memorial Chapel

The Knowles Memorial Chapel at Rollins College is an eye-catching Gothic-style chapel that has been in Orlando since 1932.

Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts

The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts is a modern and elegant performing arts center located in downtown Orlando. The center hosts a variety of shows and performances, including Broadway shows, concerts, and ballets.

Orange County Convention Center

The Orange County Convention Center is one of the largest convention centers in the United States. Located in the heart of Orlando’s tourist district, it spans over 7 million square feet and hosts a wide range of events, including trade shows, exhibitions, and some of the nation’s most popular conventions, such as Mega-Con and Comic-Con.

SunTrust Center

The SunTrust Center is a modern skyscraper that dominates the Orlando skyline. Completed in 1988, the building stands 441 feet tall and is one of the tallest buildings in the state of Florida.

Orlando City Hall

Orlando City Hall is the administrative headquarters of the city government of Orlando. The building was completed in 1991, and its design reflects the modernist style of the late 20th century. The building features a distinctive cylindrical tower and a striking facade of reflective glass panels.

Amway Center

This sprawling 875, 000 square foot arena is home to the Orlando Magic. The arena was built in 2011, and it serves as the pinnacle of Orlando entertainment, hosting over 200 events annually, from sporting events to graduations and concerts. If you’re not enjoying the event from the inside, you’ll be able to catch a spectacular view from the freeway of the corner tower bathed in colorful LED lights, signifying the joyous nature of the environment. Luckily for visitors, this venue is in the middle of the vibrant, energetic downtown district of Orlando.

Orlando Florida Temple

Described as one of Florida’s most beautiful locations, Windermere’s Orlando Florida Temple sits on a hill overlooking a series of lakes. The white temple is characterized by its elegant columns, arched windows, water features, palm trees, and generously planted shrubbery. The temple grounds are open to the public for those who would like to go in and worship or view this beautiful sight.

Holocaust Museum for Hope & Humanity

The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida (HMREC) and architecture firm Beyer Blinder Belle have unveiled the design of Orlando's new Holocaust Museum for Hope & Humanity. The 43,000-square-foot lakefront structure will be the world’s first Holocaust museum designed around survivor and witness testimonies, serving as a distinctive destination for the region and a global point of attraction.

National Pulse Memorial & Museum

OnePULSE Foundation has selected Coldefy & Associés with RDAI, Orlando-based HHCP Architects, Xavier Veilhan, dUCKS scéno, Agence TER, and Prof. The onePULSE Foundation is proud to announce the first phase of the process for designing and building a memorial, museum and associated open space, which will honor the memory of those lost and affected by the tragic events of June 12, 2016 at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, as well as inspire and bring hope to all of those who visit this place of remembrance and education.

Town Center Hotel

Plans have been announced for a new hotel in Orlando’s planned Lake Nona community, which is to be designed by Arquitectonica in one of the fastest growing communities in the United States. The 16 storey Town Center Hotel will be situated at the heart of the community, featuring a motor court entrance, a lobby, a ballroom accommodating 200 guests, as well as a rooftop pool with a lounge and accommodation for private events.

Modular Meranti Pavilion

The centerpiece of the Malaysian Timber Council’s exhibition at this year’s AIA Conference on Architecture in Orlando, Florida was a completely dismantlable four-walled enclosure constructed entirely of Meranti timber.

Under Magnitude

Suspended within Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center, the installation is a two-storey structure, formed from a network of branches that are synthesized by a single, smooth white surface.

Envision 2040: Green Works Orlando Design Competition

The City of Orlando's Mayor, Buddy Dyer, has challenged the community to develop a plan that would transform Orlando, within a generation, into one of the most environmentally-friendly, economically and socially vibrant communities in the nation. In an effort to do so, the city is introducing the Envision 2040 competition, which aims to illustrate what the city will look like in the future.
